H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf

Carl Gustaf Folke Hubertus, King of Sweden, Duke of Jämtland, became Sweden's Head of State on 15 September 1973 at the age of 27, succeeding his grandfather, King Gustaf VI Adolf.

The King's motto is: “For Sweden - With the times".

Carl Gustaf was born on 30 April 1946. He is son of then Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf, who died in a plane crash in 1947, and Princess Sibylla of Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha, who died in 1972.

King Carl Gustaf married Miss Silvia Renate Sommerlath on 19 June 1976 in Stockholm Cathedral. They have three children: Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine.

H.M. Queen Silvia

The Queen of Sweden, was born in Heidelberg, Germany, on 23 December 1943. Her parents were the late Walther Sommerlath and his Brazilian wife Alice, née de Toledo, also deceased.

Silvia Renate Sommerlath and King Carl XVI Gustaf met at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.

They announced their engagement at the Royal Palace of Stockholm on 12 March 1976, and they were married on 19 June the same year.


H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria

Victoria Ingrid Alice Désirée, Crown Princess of Sweden, Duchess of Västergötland, is the eldest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, and was born on 14 July 1977.

The declaration of Crown Princess Victoria's majority took place in the Hall of State at the Royal Palace of Stockholm on 14 July 1995.

The Crown Princess will be Sweden's first female Head of State from the Bernadotte Dynasty. In modern times Sweden has only had two queens regnant, Kristina and Ulrika Eleonora.


H.R.H. Prince Carl Philip

Prince of Sweden, Duke of Värmland, was born on 13 May 1979.

He is the second oldest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. He has two sisters, Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Madeleine.

Prince Carl Philip has a naval education and became a Lieutenant in December 2004. In May 2006 Prince Carl Philip finished a two-year course in Graphic Design at Forsbergs School of Design.


H.R.H. Princess Madeleine

Princess of Sweden, Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland, was born on 10 June 1982.

She is the youngest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. She has two older siblings, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Carl Philip.


H.R.H. Princess Lilian

Lilian Princess of Sweden, Duchess of Halland, was born on 30 August 1915 in Wales.

She married the current King's uncle, Prince Bertil, on 7 December 1976 at Drottningholm Palace Chapel. Prince Bertil died on 5 January 1997.

Princess Lilian fulfils a number of duties that were previously the responsibility of Prince Bertil, particularly in the field of sport.
